Maniac OS is built on an Ubuntu 24.04 base with a current Linux kernel, so it supports a wide range of PCs. It does not run on 32-bit PCs or on ARM computers.

The easiest way to check your PC is to start Maniac OS from the USB stick: nothing on the PC changes until you choose to install. If the screen stays black, choose Maniac OS (basic graphics) in the boot menu. The installer uses a whole disk and erases it.

The apps

Every app needs Maniac OS 1.0 or later, and a Maniac ID and internet connection to buy and install it. After that it works offline.

Internet connection

Maniac OS works without an internet connection. You need one to:

  • install apps from the Store, including Linux apps from Flathub;
  • sign in to your Maniac ID, buy an app and install it on a PC;
  • receive app updates and set the clock automatically.

Apps you’ve bought keep working offline: their licences don’t expire. When a PC is next online, it picks up changes to your account — for example a PC you deauthorised or a purchase that was refunded.
